We Plan, You Play... wedding playlists you need to hear!

A certain Ms London Bride and I have been working on creating wedding playlists for you wedding planning folk recently, and if you haven't seen our blog We Plan, You Play I'd like to draw your attention to it!

Every month we feature 25 songs to help you curate your wedding soundtrack. Although I've got to be honest, it's also an excuse for us to listen to 90s tracks (relive our youth/show our age) and dance around my living room.

From The Everly Brothers to MGMT and Darlene Love to Blackstreet there's enough musical variety to appeal to everyone from granny to your too cool for school cousin.

We set We Plan,You Play because we felt there's an awful lot of advice and inspiration for the style and design side of wedding planning but not so much for the other aspects of planning like the music. But it is as if not more important in some ways for creating atmosphere and ensuring everyone has a jolly good time.

What about you? What were the musical highlights of your big day? And if you're getting married soon or at some point in time what tunes will you be playing to get everybody shaking their thang a la dance floor??

Music, blogs, and magazines and other news...

savoir weddings news

Phew what a week last week was. Looking forward to this one being less manic! Aside from dramas with Blogger (which I'm sure a lot of you experienced), my friend and business buddy Charley and I launched We Plan, You Play which was launched through Rock n roll Bride. A wedding music blog designed to help couples compile their wedding playlists.

Nothing beats live music and all but for the hours you have an iPod running you have to think about each and every song that plays at your wedding. Especially as there's nothing worse than the wrong music for destroying the mood. And coming from a music events background I am particularly keen on encouraging clients to think about their wedding music and We Plan, You Play aims to do just that! So go check it out and let me know what you think!

Last week was also pretty cool because Nina and Patrick's wedding was featured in Wedding Magazine and I designed a mood board for Annabel over at Love my Dress - a rustic charm board, the first of three May inspired boards.

the wedding fair

Not a fan of wedding fairs in general, this is one I can get behind the idea of...

See the website here for more details. I figured this was something interesting when I read this on their site:

Wedding coming up? Fed up of sprawling soulless commercial wedding fairs? Compact and bijoux, get personal at Craft Central! All you need to add a handmade touch to the big day. From bride to evening guest, there’s something for everyone...

Sounds good no?

Have a good week my dears!

Adele - definitely making me feel her love

This week's mixtape masters post is all about Adele. I can't believe this girl is only 22. Her voice is incredible.

Her performance at the Brits was immense. And so I'm dedicating the whole of this playlist to Adele because quite frankly she rocks my world.

How to ensure your wedding reception rocks

The key ingredients to a successful wedding reception

First things first. It's a party. Whether it's fancy and formal or laid back and casual, it's a party. Ok, a party with a big budget and a lot of pressure to be great, but a party nevertheless.

Once you realise this you can break down the key components and ensure your wedding reception kicks ass.

I have thrown many many parties in my time, from Halloween parties to 20s parties to informal gatherings to big-fat-last-all-night-hootennanies. Some of them have been great and others not so much but if there's one good thing that's come of them all is that I know you have to plan a good party. And that definitely applies to your wedding reception too.

I don't mean plan in a Monica from Friends way, I just mean you can't rely on the assumption that as all your favourite people are there, the party will just work. No, in my experience, it needs some careful consideration. But the sort of planning that ls flexible and leaves room for spontaneity and fun.

So, the key ingredients to a successful wedding reception are three fold:

1) Enough, and decent food and drink
2) A comfortable, well lit and well styled space
3) A well thought out sound track

I have said before and definitely will again, wedding guests should be treated like toddlers - they need regular feeding, watering and entertaining. And if you get that right, you'll have a killer wedding party.

So..

Food & Drink

- Feed people small amounts often rather than make them wait for one big wedding breakfast. Definitely don't leave it until 6pm to feed guests if you're ceremony was at 1pm. They will get bored, irritable and some inevitably too drunk by this point.

-Similarly if you're serving a light buffet or tea party early afternoon, don't provide too much food or else no one will be hungry for the main meal that you've spent the most money on.

- Keep guests watered often. If you have to stagger bar opening times because of budget serve mini cocktails or something similar to prevent guests from getting parched and give them something to talk about.

A well styled space

Okay, so firstly you have to work with your wedding venue, not against it. Really look at the space your guests will be eating, dancing, and drinking in. This is the room to concentrate on. From grand halls, to barns to marquees there aren't many spaces that with the right styling, can't be made into the ultimate party space. So look at your wedding reception room. What does it feel like? If it wasn't your wedding how would it make you feel? How can you work with the space to enhance the atmosphere you want your wedding to have? Think about lighting, comfort, warmth, journey to the toilet and out for a cigarette. Try to imagine the 'journey' your wedding guest will go on.

Your wedding soundtrack

Obviously music is very important to me and this is the one area I would obsess on were I getting married. From when the guests arrive, to during dinner, to the after dinner dancing, to the full on party when the oldies have gone home, I would plan nearly every single song.

We've all had those nights out with friends in a bar when the music just isn't quite right. Maybe it's too loud, too cheesy, not cheesy enough, whatever it is, it just kills the vibe. And even though you're out with your best friends, the night just isn't working. Well the same thing happens at a wedding reception. So you have the think carefully - the music you have at your reception should definitely be what you as a couple love - but you also can't turn off your guests. Unless granny loves a bit of dubstep, chances are you should save that until later. But I'd advise really exploring your music options as there's plenty of songs and genres that all generations love.

That's it! What do you think? Any other key aspects to successful party planning?

The Monthly Mixtape

Coming from music backgrounds (the other, more silent half of Savoir still works as a booker for a music PR agency) we really don't talk enough about music on this blog.

There's so much I could say about music and why I love it in general let alone at weddings, so I'm not even going to start.

Instead I'm starting a new, probably monthly feature, of 'alternative' wedding music, called The Monthly Mixtape. We're going to compile a selection each month of music we ♥ and would be part of our wedding mixtape.

Some old tunes, some new, some you'll have heard, some you might not.

Music to walk down the aisle to, to dance your first dance to, or maybe just have on your playlist .

So here's 10 random lurrrvve songs for you to get all soppy and romantic to.

1. The Maccabees - Toothpaste Kisses - just a damn beautiful song - probably my favourite both lyrically and musically here. Check out the quite random vid below...

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
- ditto the loveliness
The Beach Boys - I Was Made to Love her - high tempo and fun
Radiohead - All I Need - okay so it's a bit sombre but it's an intensely romantic song
The Rolling Stones - That's How Strong My Love Is - maybe as good as the original
Green Day - Last Night On Earth - unashamedly romantic
The Killers - My List - starts off pretty sentimental - then throws in some Killers energy and good ole riffs.
Alaska in Winter - Lovely Lovely Love
- because of the title but it's a pretty epic tune
She & Him - I Was Made For You - because who wouldn't want to be a bit like Zooey Deschanel and the song is sweet without being saccharine
Friendly Fires - Kiss of Life - 'A thousand butterflies from your lips to mine'

What are your thoughts? What would be on your absolute must have music list?

Urban Soul Orchestra

Not being much of a fan of 'wedding music' that provides the same generic rubbish for every wedding, I am always excited when bands get in touch to offer something a bit different.

And our music industry connections means we know some very decent musicians who'll charge you a lot less than so called wedding bands and DJs.

I'd like to draw all you UK brides' attention to Urban Soul Orchestra. The band have a long history with the music industry (playing with Soul II Soul, Groove Armada among many) and have recently branched out into offering brides and grooms a 'non tacky' band for their weddings. Hurrah.

They're able to create pretty much whatever you want. They can do classical, chill out, rave music - whatever you need really. Urban Soul Orchestra are perfect for couples wanting one band who can do it all - from an acoustic assemble during dinner and a DJ set or big band to party to through the night.

Their DJs include Dan Lywood and Jose Carretas (Gorillza) and they've just created a 'Little Big Band' with 3 vocalists, quartet and backing tracks.

They've also played at celebrity weddings (including Peter Andre and Jordan - kind of reason enough to book them!)

New wedding band/dj agency exclusively for Savoir!!

Why are wedding bands and DJs so expensive eh? We worked in music before we got into wedding planning and let me tell you all musicians seem to add a few noughts onto their fee when it comes to playing at weddings.

In addition to their absurd fees they're often not very good. For a wedding we were guests at the DJ didn't realise his cross fader was in the middle meaning the couple's first dance was to Stayin Alive and Boyzone's Baby Can I Hold You Tonight, which was interesting to say the least.

So to aid and assist you and to ensure you're not ripped off in your quest for musical talent for your day, we have set up an agency. This essentially means we select the best artists from across the musical spectrum for you to choose from. It's in the early stages but hopefully in the not too distant future you'll be able to scroll through lists of artists to find one that you like that you might not have even heard of before but will be perfect for your wedding.
